User Manual for the National Pork Board Database Website

Version 1.0

The National Pork Board Database website allows users to interact with a database of research articles. The database contains entries on papers and research efforts in North America on environmental management practices employed on pork production operations. The website allows the users to search the database to find specific research efforts they are interested in. This website works best with either Internet Explorer 6.0 or newer or Mozilla Firefox 1.5.

I. Home Page

When you first go to the website you are directed to the Home page. The Home page gives a short description of what the National Pork Board website contains and instructions for logging in or creating an account. A user can choose to search and view information on the database using the main navigation bar to navigate between various site locations which include “Home”, “Search”, “Advanced Search”, “Help”, and “Register”. The main navigation bar appears on every page of the website for easy navigation.

II. Create Account

A user of the database is able to establish an account. A user only needs to establish an account if they need special privileges to add or edit entries. An account is not necessary to search the database. Accounts will be activated pending the approval of the Administrator of the website. A small amount of information is needed to create an account (user name, password, e-mail, and a security questions and answer).

IV. Searching

The main function of the website is to perform searches or advanced searches of the research articles. There are two search options, a simple search and an advanced search. With both search options you can choose how to sort your search results (for example, article number or year published). After searching a list of results will appear, listing the article number and title. Click on the “Select” button to see more information about the entry.

The following operators can be used to search: ( )    " "    *    and or and not.

The following are examples of how to use the search operators:

Swine and Waste or Treatment
Swine and (Waste or Treatment)
"Swine Waste" or Treatment
"Swine Waste" or Treat*
"Swine Waste" and not Treatment

A. Simple Search

This search allows users to search everything using a fill in form or you can search by individual fields. If no operator is provided, the default operator ‘and’ is used. Therefore, searching for “waste management” is equivalent to searching for “waste” and “management”. The database can be searched by all of the following elements either singly or in combination. There is also a “Search Everything” option.

·        Article Number

·        Title

·        Funding Source

·        Entity/Institution Name and Location

·        Name and Contact Information for P.I

·        Research Objectives

·        Research Summary

·        Citation

·        Abstract

B. Advanced Search
Advanced searching incorporates all of the elements of searching with the additional option to search by environmental impact category or environmental management practice, range of dates, or project completeness code. You must check at least one category and one environmental management practice in order to perform an advanced search, if not, no results will appear. Press “Go” at the bottom of the page when ready to search.

Figure 1 is an example of an advanced search.   Preferred category(ies) and environmental management practices are checked, and a range of dates and a range of completeness codes are chosen. The user may also decide to search specific areas in the Search Terms area. The options in the Search Terms area are Search Everything, Title Keyword, Entity/Institution Keyword, Name/Contact Keyword, Objectives Keyword, Summary Keyword, and Funding Source Keyword. A user is not required to enter something into the Search Term area in order to see results. In the advanced search window, the database can be searched by all of the following elements.

·        Category

·        Related Environmental Management Practice

·        Title

·        Year of Publication

·        Funding Source

·        Project Start - Project End

·        Entity/Institution Name and Location

·        Name and Contact Information for P.I.

·         Research Objectives

·        Research Summary

·        Citation

·        Abstract

The example in Figure 1 will find entries that list surface water quality as the category, method of storage and treatment of swine manure as the environmental management practice, within the years 1960-2008, and within the completeness code range of 0 to 5.
